A tudomány történetében egészen Galilei hírhedt pere óta hangoztatják, hogy a tudományos igazság összeegyeztethetetlen a világ vallásos értelmezésével. Bár meg vagyok győződve arról, hogy a tudományos igazság a maga területén legyőzhetetlen, soha nem tartottam lehetségesnek, hogy a vallásos gondolkodás tartalmát elvessem, mint az emberiség tudatának egy idejétmúlt részét, melynek mostantól búcsút kellene intenünk. Életem során ezért újból és újból arra kényszerültem, hogy a két gondolkodási terület kapcsolatáról elmélkedjek, mert soha nem kételkedtem annak valóságában, melyre mutatnak.
